Sailing
Courses
Tralee
Bay Sailing club is recognised by The Irish
Sailing Association and offers courses in sailing
following the ISA's Small Boat Sailing Scheme.
The
ISA’s Sailing Schemes will allow you to learn
and develop your sailing skills from absolute
beginner to expert sailor, in the type of boat
that you want to sail.
Improving Skills
The improving skills course allows you to develop a
competent, safe, practical approach, to sailing your boat in
moderate conditions. You will also be introduced to more
advanced aspects of the sport such as racing & day
sailing.
Previous experience
/ knowledge required
It will be assumed that every student starting
this course has already mastered the practical skills and
absorbed the background knowledge required for the Basic
Skills Course (level 2). In practical terms this implies
a seasons sailing between courses.
For Keelboat sailors this course is not intended as a
substitute for the ISA Day Skipper course for sailors of
cruising yachts.
While tuition will be given by trained instructors, much of
the work afloat will be done without instructors aboard.
Because of this, the student: Instructor ratio is increased
for this level. The change in emphasis is towards
self-reliance and decision making by the sailor.
Types of Boats
You may do this course in sailing dinghies, catamarans or
keelboats. The appropriate sections in the syllabus
reflect any differing requirements between the boat types.
Duration
The Improving Skills Course (Level 3) course should
consist at least 5 full day’s tuition. However, it may
be necessary to extend the length of the course from the 5-day
minimum when participants wish to take a more relaxed approach
to the programme or when conditions are less than ideal.
The course may also be broken into sections to facilitate
those wishing to attend courses run over weekends or weekday
evenings.
Training & Assessment
Training will be provided by an ISA Instructor
Assessment is continuous throughout the course. However
the Senior Instructor may at their discretion require the use
of either a short written paper or oral interview in assessing
your level of background knowledge.
