Tralee
Bay Sailing club is recognised by The Irish
Sailing Association and offers courses in sailing
following the ISA's Small Boat Sailing Scheme.
The
ISA’s Sailing Schemes will allow you to learn
and develop your sailing skills from absolute
beginner to expert sailor, in the type of boat
that you want to sail.
Introduction to Racing Skills
This course provides a sound introduction to the skills
that you will need to get racing at you local club.
Aim
By the end of this course, the successful sailor will have
had a sound introduction to racing at club level. Although
essentially a practical course, sessions afloat will be backed
up by a number of sessions ashore.
Experience
It will be assumed that every student starting this course
has already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the
background knowledge covered in Improving Skills (level 3). In
practical term this implies a seasons sailing between courses.
It is not necessary for a student to have completed an
Advanced Sailing Skills (level 4) course before starting this
course.
Duration
The Introduction To Racing Skills (level 4) course should
ordinarily consist of a minimum of 5 full day's tuition.
However, this may be broken into sections to facilitate those
wishing to attend courses run over weekends or weekday
evenings. The length of the course may be extended from the
5-day minimum where it suits participants to take a more
relaxed approach to the programme. Training will be provided
by an Instructor with the ISA Level 1 Racing Coach Endorsement
or by an ISA Level 1 Racing Coach.
Type of Boats
This course may be offered in any sailing dinghy, catamaran
or keelboat normally used for racing. Where the syllabus
covers equipment or techniques that are not applicable to a
particular type of boat these sections may be excluded from
the course.
Advanced Sailing Skills
On this course you will develop the skills required to
handle your boat in strong wind conditions and to undertake
more extended day trips.
Aim
By the end of this five day course, the successful
candidate will have a confident, safe, seaman like approach to
sailing and will be capable of sailing in strong wind
conditions.

sailing dinghy, catamaran or keelboat with the exception of
those boats normally sailed single handed. For those sailing
Keelboats this course is not intended as a substitute for the
ISA Day Skipper course for sailors of cruising yachts.
However, those wishing to transfer to cruising yachts may do
so on successful completion of this course, by attending (a
one day) conversion course at an ISA Recognised Cruising
School.
Assessment
Training will be provided by an ISA Instructor with the ISA
Advanced Instructor endorsement. The assessment for the course
will include the preparation and execution of a short cruise.
