Optimist Winter Clinic 2010

Hi everyone,
I would like to wish you all the very best for a Happy Christmas season and eventful New Year! Thank you all for pre booking the Winter Optimist Clinic in Fenit which is due to commence this coming Sunday the 3rd of January at 10am. We plan to finish at 4.30pm each day with the exception of the last day Wednesday the 6th when we finish up at 2pm to allow those travelling to make an early start on their journey home. Each day will consist of two sessions with a break for lunch in the middle, which will be shore-based.
While sailors should have their boats fully rigged for 10am each day there will be an option to participate in and learn about some physical training exercises specifically suited to dinghy sailors. Anyone wishing to pursue this activity should arrive dressed in suitable clothing and footwear.
The long term forecast at present for the next week shows that the weather will continue very cold with winds coming from the north east. It is extremely important therefore that the sailors wear a dry suit with three thermal layers underneath, a neck buff, balaclava or fleece hat, thermal socks and very warm winter gloves. Please note that cotton tee shirts and tracksuit bottoms worn under a dry suit will not keep the body warm in extreme conditions. To find out more about the three layer system visit the Helly Hansen or Rooster Sailing websites. If the sailors have spare hats and neck buffs please pack these in the gear bag each day as they may need a change for the afternoon session. You may be able to borrow gear from a fellow sailor at home if you are short of any bits and pieces. Encourage your sailors to make a check list of all the gear they will need to bring along as being without an item such as a hat or gloves could result in them experiencing extreme discomfort thus diminishing their ability to cope with any physical activity while sailing.

Sailors should bring a packed lunch, water, cereal bars and a flask with a warm drink each day.  We will provide soup at lunch hour and warm dilute drinks for the debrief sessions but if your child has a particular taste it might be best to ensure that what he/she likes is sent in with them. Sailors should also be reminded to bring along a sailing diary or notebook and pen each day.

If some parents are around and available to help at lunch hour or during the day their help would be greatly appreciated. We will talk to you on the first morning while the sailors are rigging their boats and see if we can draw up a rota which will not over burden anyone.

Many of you will be arriving on Saturday 2nd of January and will want to deposit boats and spars etc into the Dinghy Park and school. We will be there from 2pm to 4pm, after this time the gates will be closed but there will be plenty of time to unload boats the following morning when the clinic commences.

We look forward to seeing you there. If you have any further queries please phone me on
087 7606795.

All the best
Lorna Browne
